Random Composer Quotes

The beauty of blogging is the ability to compile bits and pieces from other sources. In this case, I draw on my favorite film and film music critic Clark Douglas. He recently posted a list of some funny composer quotes on his website. Take a read; have a laugh.

Hans Zimmer: "I wake up around noon, light a cigarette, get a cup of coffee, sit in the bathtub for an hour and daydream, and I usually come up with some ideas... It's a very irresponsible life. The only decisions I make are about the notes I'm writing."

John Williams: "So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories."

James Horner: "I had been asked to do a couple of other big films, which I passed on, [including] Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, because I desperately wanted to do Ron's movie [A Beautiful Mind]. Those are movies that mean something to me on a very basic level. Those are really like art films as opposed to commerce films."

James Horner: "Erm, I'm not really sure I've ever heard any of Jerry Goldsmith's music."

Jerry Goldsmith: "Well, I think James Horner is a bit eclectic. But then again, at times we've all helped ourselves to the work of others."

Jerry Goldsmith: "I'm glad that collectors like that exist because they buy records. But I sometimes wonder if an avid collector has a life."

Hans Zimmer: Ha, everybody today needs synthesizers, you have to use them to give the directors an idea of where you're going, all the different elements. Well, unless you're John Williams, because he is a demon piano player, and can somehow stir up an entire orchestra on the piano with his two hands."

John Barry: "Oh they say 'I don't like that tune' or 'It's not the tune I want; I can't hum it' so then you say 'Well, hum me White Christmas' and they make these strange croaking sounds, and you say 'Yeah, you've got a great ear.' I mean this guy can't even whistle the simplest thing and yet he's going to criticise you after he's hired you."

John Barry: "Well, frankly, I think Guiness is one ---- of a drink!"

Danny Elfman: "It was a lot of fun too, because Halloween has always been my favorite night of the year. For me, writing something in the spirit of Halloween is like Mother Teresa writing on charity and sacrifice. It's just second nature to me." -- 1993, on The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Jerry Goldsmith: "If our music survives, which I have no doubt it will,
then it will because it is good."

IN OTHER NEWS: Danny Elfman has been demoted (or demoted himself, according to some people supposedly 'in the know') from screen recognition for his job composing parts of music for the upcoming movie Nacho Libre. I say it's a shame for the movie, itself, not having one more blockbuster name attached to their movie.
